Lately more than ever, we’ve been reading news about how car brands are working hard towards making autonomous cars a reality. Even though we will not own autonomous cars any time in the near future, but each day we’re getting closer than we thought we would.

Some aspects of autonomous driving has already become a reality in the automotive world right now, but one very important aspect will be more prevalent in the few coming years.

A big group of automakers got together and decided to have autonomous braking systems installed in all of their vehicles. Their plan is to make autonomous braking systems a standard feature on all new vehicles by September 1, 2022. That’s just around 6 years from now!

Pretty much every company that is currently selling a light-duty vehicle is included in the list of automakers that are participating. According to The Car Connection, the brands are: Audi, BMW, Fiat – Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Maserati, Mazda, Mercedes – Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo. This is amazing.

The whole meaning behind this move is to try to cut down on the number of accidents in each year. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), automated braking systems should prevent more than 9,000 accidents and 4,000 injuries associated with those accidents annually. Besides the main reason, which is the accidents, it also aims to lead to a reduction in the cost of automotive insurance. That is ofcourse if you own a new 2022 model year that is fitted with it. So if by that time you do not own one of these cars with the autonomous braking system, then your insurance premium may rise a bit.

With all the accidents we hear every day and with all the RIP photos of youth we see very often, we’re glad to read this piece of news which aims to make roads safer. Such a great move.

Drive safely everyone!
