Al Habtoor Motors is the official distributor of Mitsubishi cars in the UAE, with the brand offering nine different new car models in the country. While the automaker sells two affordable city cars, i.e., the Mitsubishi Attrage and Mitsubishi Mirage, it is primarily known for its crossovers, SUVs, and the L200 pickup truck. One of the most affordable and top-selling of these is the Mitsubishi ASX, where ASX stands for "Active Sports Crossover".

The Mitsubishi ASX has been around since early 2010, and over the years, Mitsubishi has given it three facelifts. The latest, third facelift, of the ASX was unveiled in 2019, launched in several markets as the 2020 model year. The ASX crossover is based on the GS platform and was jointly developed by Daimler Chrysler and Mitsubishi. Among the crossovers/SUVs sold by the carmaker in the UAE, the ASX is Mitsubishi’s smallest and most affordable. So, here are 5 reasons the Mitsubishi ASX could be your next car:

Best-looking ASX thus far

Up until the recent facelift, the cute and compact dimensions of the Mitsubishi ASX lent itself really well for those who love a small and unassuming-looking crossover SUV. The exterior design of the ASX has always been highlighted by its protruding nose, where the first couple of models had an ‘open mouth’ grille design, though the second facelift replaced that with a taller and shinier unit that is more mature in its appearance.

Leaving aside the current ASX, all three models before it featured several design similarities. Some of the most noteworthy of these include the headlights, taillights, side profile, faux roof rails, rear roof spoiler, and even the tailgate – all these are identical in these three ASX models. However, there are more distinct differences between the second facelift and the latest third facelift.

The new Mitsubishi ASX gets a sleek & contemporary front fascia boasting a wider grille with Mitsubishi’s latest ‘Dynamic Shield’ design with plenty of chrome garnish, along with a stylish clamshell hood, and an entirely revised front & rear bumpers. The LED lights up front are new and of a modern design as well, and while the taillights look similar to the previous model, they now incorporate fancier LEDs that grab one’s attention much better.

The new alloy wheels look good too, while the faux rear diffuser adds a sense of sportiness. Suffice to say, the new Mitsubishi ASX is possibly the best-looking ASX that has rolled out of the production facility.

Bigger and roomier than some of its rivals

The Mitsubishi ASX is 4,365 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and up to 1,645 mm in height, while its wheelbase measures 2,670 mm. In comparison, cars like the Chevrolet Groove, Ford EcoSport, and Honda HR-V are smaller than the new Mitsubishi ASX. The size advantage reflects on the inside of the ASX as well, where many other cars in the segment fall short on roominess offered to their occupants.

Old-school & user-friendly interior

While there are cars in this segment that present a more contemporary and better-trimmed interior, the Mitsubishi ASX’s cabin design can come across as charmingly old-school with a user-friendly touch that some might find interesting. The large analog gauge cluster and rotary dials are easy to read and use while driving. The Mitsubishi ASX interior gets fabric upholstered seats in the lower variants that, while not fancy, feel sufficiently comfortable.

Punchy engine & decent performance for the money

The Mitsubishi ASX comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine which, when mixed with air and petrol, is capable of producing 148 hp and 197 Nm of maximum torque. Depending on the market, the Mitsubishi ASX can be had with either two-wheel-drive (2WD) or four-wheel-drive (4WD), while a CVT automatic transmits the engine’s power to the wheels.

The ASX’s four-popper allows the crossover to achieve a top speed of over 190 km/h, while it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 11 seconds. Even though that is not excitingly fast, the Mitsubishi ASX can handle cruising on highways while not being too bothersome to one’s ears. The ASX is faster than cars like the Chevrolet Groove, Ford EcoSport, and even the Honda HR-V.

It is affordable yet practical

The price of the Mitsubishi ASX in the UAE starts from around AED 70,000, which makes it cheaper than some rivals such as the Honda HR-V, Nissan Kicks, and Toyota Urban Cruiser. Despite its low starting price, the Mitsubishi ASX still makes a case for itself by being a practical urban crossover that is suitable to take you on long drives, as well as coping with daily commutes, all the while offering multiple storage areas and a decent boot space.

Let’s face it. The Mitsubishi ASX is not the most technologically advanced, exciting, or most comfortable car in its segment. However, the ASX certainly offers fairly acceptable handling characteristics, decent fuel economy & performance, and a fair amount of kit when you go for the fully loaded variant.
