Why we split your budget 65 / 20 / 15

Owning a car costs more than the monthly installment. This calculator starts from the total amount you are willing to spend every month — then splits it across finance, fuel, and maintenance so you can shop for cars that realistically fit your life.

A car's real monthly cost is the installment plus fuel plus keeping it on the road. Putting the whole budget into the installment is how people end up with a car they can finance but not run. The split reserves 65% for finance, 20% for fuel and 15% for service and maintenance — a middle ground between the classic 20/4/10 rule (all car costs under 10% of take-home pay) and the way lenders in Bahrain assess you: total repayments capped as a share of monthly income.

Three ways to size a car budget

  • 20 / 4 / 10

    down · years · of take-home pay

    The classic rule

Put 20% down, repay within 4 years, and keep every car cost under 10% of take-home pay.

  • 65 / 20 / 15

    finance · fuel · service

    The YallaMotor split

65% finance, 20% fuel, 15% service — of the monthly car budget you set, whatever your income.

  • 50%

    of monthly income

How lenders in Bahrain check you

All your monthly repayments together must stay under 50% of your monthly income — the debt-burden ceiling.

Not sure what your budget should be? Financial planners suggest keeping all transport costs to 10–15% of your income.

What does a monthly car budget have to cover?

  • The installment

The finance repayment itself — the share we match cars against, estimated for every car at the same standard terms.
  • Fuel

Depends on your commute and the engine; electric cars have no fuel bill, which is why we match them against a bigger share.
  • Service and maintenance

Scheduled servicing, tyres, and the small repairs that come with age and mileage.
  • Not included

Insurance, registration and tolls sit outside the split — add them on top when you set your budget.

Frequently asked questions

What is a car affordability calculator?

A tool that starts from what you can spend on a car each month and works out which cars fit. This one splits your budget between the installment, fuel and maintenance, converts the installment share into a maximum car price, and then shows you real listings on YallaMotor under that price.

Is this the same as a car finance calculator?

No. A finance calculator starts from a car and tells you the installment. The affordability calculator works the other way round: it starts from your monthly budget and tells you which cars you can afford — then links to the finance calculator if you want to change the terms for a specific car.

Does this use my salary?

No. You only enter the total amount you are willing to spend on a car each month; no income or personal details are asked for or stored. If you would rather start from your salary, the salary-to-car matcher applies a percentage of income for you.

Are the results exact?

They are estimates. The installment for each car assumes a standard down payment, tenure and rate; fuel and maintenance are shares of your budget, not quotes. Your bank's offer, your driving and the car's condition decide the real numbers.

Why does YallaMotor split my budget?

Because the installment is only part of owning a car. Reserving a share for fuel and another for service and maintenance keeps the recommendation realistic — a car you can finance but not run is not affordable.

How much of my salary should go on a car?

A common guideline is to keep every car cost — installment, fuel, insurance and upkeep — at or below 20% of your net income; the salary-to-car matcher applies that rule for you. Lenders in Bahrain also cap your total monthly repayments as a share of monthly income, so a car budget should leave room under that cap.

Can I link straight to the cars for my budget?

Yes. Add budget (your monthly budget for the car) to the page address. The page opens with the cars in your range already listed, and the address follows your changes, so you can copy it and share it. For example: https://bahrain.yallamotor.com/tools/car-affordability?budget=300
