Quick Review

A true classic roadster, the Mazda MX-5 is an affordable sports car and one of the top vehicles in its segment. Few cars can touch the MX for head-turning looks and snappy performance. On the downside, it's very snug inside and not terribly practical. It comes at an attractive budget price, but at the cost of some higher-end features in the base model. Power accessories are standard for the entry level trim, as is tilt steering and a CD player.

The 2012 Mazda MX-5 has no substantial changes from the 2011 model year.

The Nissan 370Z is a good alternative, although you may have to pay a higher price. The Nissan rivals the MX for performance and extra features, though it might be a little less practical if you consider the space factor. If you want a little more space you might consider a convertible model of the iconic Mini Cooper. The Mini has four seats and a bit more headroom than the MX. Another slightly larger sports car is the Ford Mustang: a four-seater, larger and a tad less agile than the Mazda MX but still fun and sporty to drive. It's available as a convertible, and you can plump for one of the higher powered engines.

A good option for the budget shopper, the Mazda MX-5 offers sports-car glamour at an affordable price. It's really only suitable for singles or couples.

The drive is exciting, the Mazda MX's engine is peppy and the handling is quick and direct.
