Quick Review

For 2012, there have been no substantial changes from the 2011 model year.

The Nissan Altima is a midsize sedan; a coupe version is also offered. The coupe and sedan have two trim levels (2.5 S and 3.5 SR).The 2.5 liter engine comes equiped with 4 cylinders whereas the 3.5 litre engine come with 6 cylinders. For those who want precise handling, the Altima is an excellent choice: predictable and confidence-inspiring in challenging situations, it responds well to its driver. To get that agile handling, however, you have to sacrifice some comfort. The Altima's suspension is firmer than average, making it less smooth over uneven stretches. The interior uses top-quality materials but it's rather small inside for a sedan, with smaller headroom and legroom.

If you want nimble handling and a fun drive, you might also consider the roomy Mazda 6 sedan. If you can bear to do without some of that sparkling agility, the Honda Accord is another option. The Accord's base four-cylinder engine leaves makes it feel a little underpowered, but it's a very reliable midsize sedan.

The Nissan Altima really shines on twisty roads where handling is tricky. Long journeys over less-than-perfect road surfaces could become uncomfortable. In addition, without a lot of room for boosters or infant car seats in the back, there are alternative choices for shoppers with small children.

The Altima is a good choice for the small family economy shopper who wants expert handling and lots of gadgets, not to mention low maintenance costs and a great resale value.
