Quick Review

The Mercedes SLK Class has been completely overhauled for the 2012 model year. The exterior appearance has been brought into line with the flagship SLS AMG gullwing coupe and roadster. The front fascia and HVAC vents have been redesigned. Three new engines are available: an efficient turbocharged 4-cylinder and a direct-injected V6. Another addition is the Magic Sky roof, which goes from transparent to opaque at the touch of a button.

The Mercedes SLK Class is a strong contender in the luxury roadster segment. The only other car to offer a retractable hard-top like the SLK's is the BMW Z4. While the 2011 SLK couldn't really top the Z4's fuel economy, the addition of the 4-cylinder turbo engine option puts it back in the efficiency game. The Z4 no longer outmatches the SLK on performance. The SLK edges the Z4 on standard features -- there are plenty of goodies available for the Z4 but many of them are optional rather than standard, rapidly pushing the price up. Another challenger in the luxury sports segment is the Porsche Boxster. The Boxster certainly looks lush and exotic next to the more businesslike SLK, and offers more performance; but it's a little lighter on desirable standard features and doesn't offer a hard top.

The Mercedes SLK is aimed at the sports car fan with an eye for luxury.

The SLK is an exciting drive. Variable suspension lets you keep things springy and stiff if you want, or opt for a cushioned ride.
