Quick Review

The Range Rover is one of the big figures in the large luxury SUV segment. It occupies a very unusual niche: few vehicles even try to combine such genuine interior and exterior luxury with those famous Land Rover off-road chops.

One that does is the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class; the Mercedes hill-climbing and canyon-crawling abilities don't quite match the Range Rover's, but it's a near thing. The GL-Class offers comparable interior luxury, plus that crisp and striking Mercedes exterior. It also carries that striking Mercedes price tag, which might be a point in the more affordable Range Rover's favor.

Another possible option is the Toyota Land Cruiser; neither quite as hungry for challenging terrain as the Range Rover nor as handsome and iconic, the Land Cruiser still makes short work of rough trails and is very plush inside. Luxury shoppers are unlikely to be wooed by the Toyota's lower price, and may be deterred by its bland exterior. The Land Cruiser's more up-market cousin, the Lexus LX, offers luxury that's more at the Range Rover's level, but it can't compete with the Range Rover's muscle.

The Range Rover is ideal for the luxury shopper who either resides in remote area or enjoys long journeys across challenging terrain. The Range Rover delivers stability and rugged brawn in the wild. It's surprisingly polite on the highway, offering a drive that's close to a sport sedan for comfort.
