Quick Review

The differences between the Audi A6 2011 and 2012 model years is striking. The A6 has been extensively reworked; even the LED taillights have been restyled. It has been redesigned with a more athletic low-slung profile than the 2011 model. Although shorter overall, the 2012 A6's wheelbase is three inches longer, making for a roomier car. Changes in construction bring the new A6 in under 1588 kilos; not bad for a 4.9 metre-plus luxury sedan.

Inside, the array of gadgets has been extended significantly, taking the A6 closer to its technology-focused big brother, the Audi A8. A multimedia interface (MMI) with a character-recognition enabled touch-pad lets you access the navigation, phone and audio system functions easily. Updatable firmware powers the MMI, which boasts a matte VGA display and a variety of functions. The in-car Wi-Fi can connect to eight devices simultaneously.

With its sleek looks, opulent yet understated interior, and high-tech gadgets, the A6 has plenty to attract the luxury shopper looking for an executive car. The sterling safety rating will also make this car an attractive proposition for those in the market for an up-market family sedan.

The A6 offers an all-wheel drive system that's reverse biased (typically a 40-60 split between front and back wheels, with more bias when the going gets slippery) which gives it excellent handling. Depending on the engine you choose, fuel consumption is between 8.4 litres and 12.4 litres per 100 km. The engine noise is a pleasant low growl, but road noise can be an issue.
