Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer Concept

Mitsubishi pulled out all the stops at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show when it showcased the impressive looking Engelberg Tourer Concept. So named after a famous ski resort in the beautiful country of Switzerland, the Engelberg Tourer is the Japanese brand’s newest PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). This is an important vehicle for Mitsubishi as there is likelihood that the next-generation Pajero could be based on it. Likewise, it may also lead to the development of an all-new generation of the Outlander crossover.

As we know, the outgoing Mitsubishi Pajero is over two decades old now. However, it’s one of the brand’s best-selling models in various parts of the world. So, it wouldn’t be a far-fetched idea to consider that the Engelberg Tourer could turn out to be the next Pajero. As for the concept car itself, the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer looks like it’s ready to enter any Discover Channel exploration tour. The exterior styling of the Engelberg Tourer is modern and sophisticated, yet retains the boxy and upright stance of a no-nonsense SUV.

The front fascia of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer incorporates the brand’s signature ‘Dynamic Shield’ grille and bumper design, sleek LED daytime-running lights, vertically-stacked LED headlights, and a heavy-duty skid plate. Meanwhile, the LED foglights are integrated neatly into the rooftop-mounted box. The tall and buff side profile of this SUV further emphasizes its adventure-ready attitude along with the generous amount of ground clearance, flared wheel arches, and large alloy rims. Also visible along the sides are the small extensions for the digital wing mirrors, highly-reflective chrome coating along the sides of the roof box, and a floating roof design. The rear of the Engelberg features suave, wraparound LED taillights and a large skid plate on the bumper.

The interior of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer concept looks spectacularly modern and upscale. The dual-tone cabin with its black and white trim adds the right amount of contrast and style, while the gentle blue ambient lighting adds a touch of elegance and class. The Engelberg Tourer has been designed as a three-row, six-seat SUV and as such, looks spacious and comfortable enough even for adults. On the cabin technology front, the SUV comes armed with an all-digital HD driver’s display and even more interestingly, a large multimedia touch-infotainment screen.

The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer concept’s touchscreen houses one of the most advanced navigation systems ever installed in a car. Once the user enters a particular destination, the onboard computers take over and then start calculating various factors such as the prevailing weather, road and traffic conditions, and route topography among others. The system will then proceed and preselect the most suitable drive mode for the route, plus it will also engage the vehicle’s battery management computer to command the precise torque output at each wheel. This maximizes efficiency and reduces drivetrain losses, along with ensuring optimum comfort for the occupants. That’s indeed a pretty cool system.

Under the hood of the Engelberg Tourer concept is a run-of-the-mill, naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder petrol engine. This unit comes paired to a 20 kWh battery to form the PHEV system and when required, this large SUV can run on only electric power for up to 70 km. When combined with the internal combustion engine, the total range of the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer concept jumps to 700 km. The aforementioned battery pack directs its juice to twin electric motors which are mounted at the front and rear axles. For improved traction and stability over challenging surfaces, the Engelberg is fitted with Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) and Active Yaw Control (AYC).
