Sneak Peek Into the Interior Of The Mercedes-AMG SL

Roadsters have people thronging into dealerships because of their pizzazz which makes them so coveted as touring vehicles. The open-roof ‘wind in the hair’ experience they provide is relished by those who love globetrotting. Moreover, the comfort these cars provide is unparalleled and when Mercedes-Benz is working on a roadster, expectations increase manifold. The German marque has continuously wowed the audience since its very first 300 SL roadster which sported gullwing doors that became the centre of attraction in no time. Since then, the car has faced stiff competition from so many models that debuted in this segment serving the aristocrats and now we have the latest iteration, christened the AMG SL, whose interior has been revealed.

Design of the interior

The outgoing generation of the SL despite being several years old still has an interior which is cosy and enthralling enough. However, the SL makes gigantic leaps forward in this department adopting several cues from the AMG-GT and the AMG GT 4-door Coupe. To start with, a new 6-spoke flat-bottomed steering with capacitive touch buttons and AMG lettering makes its presence in the SL. Two-tone hues of black and beige outlined with all-pervasive ambient lighting looks regal and is a superfluous proof of coming from the future. 

The diamond stitching on the seats adds to the temptation of being seated in the car. A clever touch is the headrests which have been coalesced in the seats to provide maximum comfort. Metal surrounds for the Burmester speakers are palpable elements ensuring that even the most finicky buyers get their money’s worth. Like several contemporary Mercedes-Benz models, turbine-shaped AC vents debut on the new AMG SL too.

In times where most cars have transformed into digital contraptions, Mercedes-Benz likes to call the interior of the AMG-SL, “hyperanalogue” as it consolidates digital and analog features to ode to the pedigree curated by the previous generations of the SL. As a result, you are welcomed by two screens-a 12.3-inch LCD screen for the instrument panel which has been enveloped into the visor to dodge the reflections from the sunlight even when the roof is lowered. 

However, the other 11.9-inch touchscreen interface isn’t integrated with the instrument panel but follows a portrait layout like cars from Tesla. This screen uses the latest gen MBUX system from the S-Class, makes knobs ostentatious and abates them. It is used to access literally all the functions such as drive modes and temperature controls among others. It has freed up space for a storage compartment where mobile phones can be charged wirelessly. The Touchpad can also be used to sift through the menus. 

After a long time, the SL returns itself in a 2+2 seating format. The rear seats can accommodate adults upto 150 cm in height or can be used instead as a draught-stop if these aren’t required. These can also be used to accommodate a golf bag, should the need arise. The front seats are offered
