Mandatory seatbelts for backseat passengers starting 1st July 2017

Much to the delight of safety advocates in the UAE, the Federal Traffic Council has implemented a new ruling that makes the use of seatbelts for all occupants within a vehicle, mandatory. Drivers will be penalized with a fine of AED 400 for each passenger within the vehicle without a seatbelt.

“The fine is Dh400 for each passenger not wearing a seatbelt, so if the driver is wearing a seatbelt and the other three passengers are not wearing it, then he needs to pay Dh1,200 in total for the three passengers, with four traffic points” said General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Head of the UAE Federal Traffic Council.
In an attempt to reduce road fatalities, the new rules also prohibit children below the age of 10 and adults below 145 cm in height from sitting in the passenger front seat. Appropriate child car seats must be used for all children under the age of four or drivers could invite a fine of AED 400 and four black points.

Official statistics reveal a road fatality count of 725 people in 2016, a number that authorities are aiming to reduce to 3 deaths for every 100,000 people in the UAE.
