Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 has been in existence since 2005, and was the German automaker’s flagship SUV until the arrival of the new Q8. The first-generation Q7 was built on Volkswagen’s E Platform, something it shared with the VW Touareg and Porsche’s Cayenne. The Q7 was also the first and largest SUV ever produced by the Four Rings and as such, was classified as a full-size, seven-seater family crossover vehicle. However, in certain markets, the Q7 is only available with five seats. The Q7 got its first makeover in 2010, when the model was facelifted and received a significant cosmetic update. However, the all-new second-generation would only go on sale five years later.

Upon launch, the much more modern and technologically advanced second-gen Audi Q7 was received with mixed criticism. Compared to its predecessor’s bulky and visually vast presence, the new model’s sleeker and more wagon-like styling didn’t initially seem convincing enough. However, it has since gone on to become of the marque’s best-selling models - especially in their crossover/SUV category. The new iteration of the Q7 continues to use the VW Group’s platform for its underpinnings, and this time around, it features their flagship MLB architecture. The new platform has allowed Audi engineers to not only reduce the bulk of this SUV by an astonishing 325 kilograms, but also increase its structural integrity and strength.

In the Middle East markets such as the United Arab Emirates, the new Audi Q7 remains a popular choice for buyers looking for a well-rounded, feature-rich and comfortable five-seat luxury SUV. Depending on the variant and trim level, a new Q7 can cost anywhere between 268,000 dirhams to 345,000 dirhams. The former will get you into the range and will be enough to let you drive away the 40 TFSI CS, which is the base trim of the Q7. It comes equipped with a 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-banger which is good for 252 hp and 370 Nm of torque. Utilizing a smooth-shifting yet quick 8-speed Tiptronic transmission alongside Audi’s famous Quattro all-wheel drive system, this motor allows the 1.9-ton Q7 to hit 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds. Meanwhile, the frugal nature of this TFSI engine means that fuel consumption is also relatively low - up to 8.0 L/100 km should satisfy most.

However, if you spend another 77,000 dirhams, you arrive at the top-of-the-range 45 TFSI Sport trim. The Q7 Sport comes with the fancy S-line package which not only makes it look cooler and more aggressive, but also gets firmer suspension.  Under the hood, the Q7 now comes powered by a 3.0-liter turbo V6 with 333 hp and 440 Nm of maximum torque. As before, it comes mated to the same 8-speed gearbox and Quattro AWD tech, but it’s irrefutably faster than the base model. The sprint from naught to 100 km/h now flashes by in just over 6 seconds, while the top speed is electronically-limited to 250 km/h. Still a strict five-seater, this performance-oriented variant of the two-ton Q7 manages to return around 8.1 L/100 km.

The 2019 Audi Q7 is generously loaded with creature comforts and gadgets: you get automatic LED headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, 19-inch alloy wheels, intelligent entry with push-button start, panoramic sunroof, adaptive air suspension, radar-guided cruise control, quad-zone climate control, leather upholstery, electrically-operated front seats with heating & cooling function, power tailgate, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit driver’s display, an 8.3-inch MMI head unit with built-in Google Maps navigation, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, WiFi hotspot, and an optional 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo which sounds absolutely bloody amazing! Finally, the new Q7’s safety gear includes a whole barrage of airbags, along with blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, hill assist, vehicle stability control, traction control system, virtual surround-view parking assist etc.
