Ferrari 488 Spider 2016 First Drive
Tags:
The most anticipated drop-top this year would be the Ferrari 488 Spider. Based on the spectacular 488 GTB supercar, this machine is bound to be the proper style statement among the elites. Since the car was handed to me for a few hours, I won’t be able to delve into the details. Let’s have a look at this newest beauty from Ferrari.
Exterior
Ferrari has produced some memorable topless supercars but the 458 was their best effort hands down. Well, that’s about to be the thing of the past because in terms of design, this thing is love at first sight. Those curves, that color, I can go on forever – it is that beautiful. This thing is a head turner wherever it goes. I mean just look at it! Flip the roof switch and suddenly you feel you’re the king of the road. The convertible styling only adds to the beauty of this machine. Simply wow.

Interior
The 488 Spider’s cabin is the same as the coupe. And, that is similar to the 458. So, not much to say, except, the interior is functional at best. The seats are comfortable as compared to the competitors. I was able to drive for more than 3 hours straight in a supercar and that’s an achievement. The insulation is adequate however the wind deflector is not that great as my hairdo was transformed from one shape to another. Other than that, all is well.
Drive
Well, what can I say? I have already tested the 488 GTB so I knew what I was getting into. But, somehow, with the roof down and the engine roaring behind me, the 488 Spider’s drive is much better and more engaging that the GTB. It is powered by the same 3.9 liter twin turbo V8 engine producing 660 BHP and it is FAST! I have no other ways to express the g-force that pushes you in the seat once the turbos kick in. And, the turbos don’t take time – which is the reason everyone loves the 488. There is absolutely no turbo lag noticeable. This car wants to be driven faster and faster especially due to the lightning fast gearshifts. Again, I was just shifting gears along the way because the shifts are that smooth. Overall, the drive is quick but less dramatic as compared to 458.
Verdict
I would buy this over the GTB.
