Originally born in the early 1970s, the Honda Civic is one the highest-selling and most popular cars of all time. It came out during a period when oil prices were at an all-time high, and back when most other cars on the road were unreliable, heavy, and dirty for the environment. With its sensible and practical design, frugal running costs, and top-notch reliability, the Honda Civic soon became a raging success – something that it still is.
The Honda Civic is also a household name in the Middle East, and outsells many of its nearest rivals. Presently in its tenth generation, the 2019 Honda Civic faces way tougher challengers than its forerunners ever did. The main rivals for the Civic include the Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3 sedan, and Hyundai Elantra.
The 2019 Honda Civic has a smooth, coupe-like exterior with neat proportions and thus comes across as a debonair family sedan. The sharp front fascia includes Honda’s new “wing” design for the grille that extends all the way to the top of the sleek headlamps like eye-brows, and the front bumper gets designer faux vents plus a central air dam.
The side outline of the new Civic clearly showcases its arched front fenders, aerodynamic wing mirrors, and a dramatic coupe-like sloping roof. The steeply-raked C-pillar and window at the back further highlight this car’s coupe ambitions. The striking C-shaped LED taillights look fancy, and the big rear bumper gets its dose of fake vents as well. All in all, this Honda’s head-turning design is surely praiseworthy.
The 2019 Honda Civic bears dimensions of 4.575 meters in length, 1.755 meters in width, 1.435 meters in height, and boasts a 2.670-meter wheelbase. Despite its svelte coupe exterior, the Civic’s boot space is a generous 478 liters.
The 2019 Honda Civic’s interior is as edgy and futuristic as its exterior styling might have you believe. The thick steering wheel, digital instrument console, and the driver-oriented center stack are neat touches, and so is the application of different textures, colors, and shapes in this cabin.
The Honda Civic’s cabin materials, build quality, and general fit and finish are good too. However, the sloping roofline does limit headroom for taller rear passengers, though legroom isn’t an issue. The seats offer great support and are even comfortable on longer journeys. The 2019 Civic gets features like LED headlights with DRLs, 17-inch alloy wheels, electric mirrors, keyless entry with push-button and remote start, electric sunroof, leather seats with power operation, ambient lighting, automatic air-con, cruise control, electronic handbrake, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment rig with navigation.
Some of the safety features of the Civic include 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, electronic stability and traction control, hill start assist, tire pressure monitor, parking sensors with camera, and a lane departure camera.
Engine and performance
The 2019 Honda Civic comes with three 4-cylinder engines – a naturally-aspirated 1.6 and 2.0, and finally a 1.5-liter turbocharged motor in the RS variant. While the first two engines make 123 HP with 151 Nm and 158 HP with 187 Nm of torque, respectively, the latter produces 180 horses with a healthy 220 Nm of torque.
All Civics come equipped with a CVT gearbox and power is always sent to the front wheels. Fuel consumptions figures for the three engines are 5.4, 6.9, and 5.8L/100 km, respectively. Top speed for the sporty Civic RS is 210 km/h, and it does 0-100 km/h in 8.4 seconds.
Prices for the 2019 Honda Civic range between AED 69,900 and AED 97,000, while insurance costs are upward of AED 1,573.
